February, MCMVII, No. 2 – Henry George (1839-1897), American political economist & journalist, who sparked several reform movements of the Progressive Era. George famously argued that a single tax on land values would create a more productive and just society. His most famous work, Progress & Poverty (1879), selling millions of copies, explored the paradox of increasing inequality and poverty, amid economic and technological progress. Here he explored solutions of rent capture such as land value taxation and other anti-monopoly reforms. pgs. 41-75
March, MCMVII, No. 3 – Garibaldi. Giuseppe Garibaldi (1804-1882), who was instrumental in the unification of Italy, also was an advocate to President Lincoln in the abolishment of slavery, & wrote to him, “Posterity will call you the great emancipator, a more enviable title than any crown could be, and greater than any merely mundane treasure.” pgs. 77-108
April, MCMVII, No. 4 – Richard Cobden (1804-1865), was and English politician, manufacturer,
& a compaigner for free trade and peace. Notably, in 1838, he and John Bright founded the Anti-Corn Law League, aimed at abolishing the unpopular Corn Laws, which protected landowners' interests by levying taxes on imported wheat, thus raising the price of bread. pgs. 109-136
June, MCMVII, No. 6 – John Knox (1514-1572), was a Scottish minister, Reformed theologian and writer was a leader of the country's Reformation, & founded the Presbyterian Church of Scotland. He has been described as having contributed to the struggle for genuine human freedom, by teaching a duty to oppose unjust governament in order to bring about moral and spiritual change. pgs. 165-185
