July, MCMVII, No. 1 – John Bright (1811-1889), a Quaker, was a British statesman, one of the greatest orators of his generation and a promoter of free trade policies. He did more than any other man to prevent the intervention of his country on the side of the South during the American Civil War, & headed reform agitation in 1867 which brought the industrial working class within the pale of the constitution. He promoted the alliance between middle class idealism and trade unionism, which lives in the present-day Labour Party. pgs. 1-23
August, MCMVII, No. 2 – Bradlaugh. Charles Bradlaugh (1833-1891), was an English political activist, & advocate of trade unionsim, & universal suffrage. pgs. 25-54
September, MCMVII, No. 3 – Theodore Parker (1810-1860), was a reforming minister of the Unitarian church, who as a reformer & abolitionist, inspired speeches by Abraham Lincoln and Martin Luther King Jr.. He often used the phrase, “A democracy – of all the people, by all the people, for all the people” in his letters and writing. pgs. 57-81
October, MCMVII, No. 4 – Oliver Cromwell (1599-1658), was an English statesman, & soldier, overthrowing the monarchy for a brief period, declaring a republic, known as the Commonwealth of England. pgs. 85-114
November, MCMVII, No. 5 – Anne Hutchinson (1591-1643), a Puritan reformer, is a key figure in the history of religious freedom in England's American colonies and the history of women in ministry. Among her notable descendents are President Franklin D. Roosevelt, & Associate Justice of the Supreme Court, Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr.. pgs. 115-143
December, MCMVII, No. 6 – Rousseau. Jean-Jacques Rousseau (1712-1778), was a Genevan philosopher, writer & composer. His philosphy influenced the progress of the Age of Enlightenment throughout Europe. His Discourse on Inequality, which argues that private property is the source of inequality, and The Social Contract, which outlines the basis for a legitimate political order, are cornerstones in modern political and social thought. He believed in a legislative process that necessitates the active involvement of every citizen in decision-making through discussion and voting, coining this process as the “general will”, the collective will of a society as a whole. pgs. 145-169
