Rare, Original, 'The Ironmongers' Diary and Text Book. 1883', lIlustrated Advertisements, Hardcover, With Diary attributed to a Smith Family from St. Thomas, Ontario, 44 pink pages of Contents plus pages of Advertisements, 42 Cannon Street, London, England, 1882, 10 1/2” x 7 1/2”, in very good condition with wear including corner bumps, spine edge losses on covers, some spine separation from text, separation, & blank end page loss.
An extensive Contents include, Postal Information; Taxes and Licences; This Year's Legislation including 'Married Women's Property Act.'; English and Foreign Patent Law; Dissolution of Partnerships; Colonial Agencies in London; Colonial and Foreign Mails (including 'Canada, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, etc by Canadian packet'); Electric Lighting Act; Iron and Steel etc, Works in the United States; Bank rate; Mineral Statistics, Exports of Iron & Steel (including Tinplates to Canada from 1877 to 1880); New Russian Tarriff, Australian and New Zealand Tariffs; Agricultural Societies, etc.; Foreign Telegram Rates (including Canada); Ironmasters' Quarterly Meetings; List of Railway Officials; Colonial Possessions (include Dominion of Canada, Brit. Columbia, Ontario, Quebec, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince E. There is a page opposite the diary section, filled in with pencil notation from Dec. 13, to Dec. 31St 1900, St. Thomas 1900 with mentions of Mrs. Smith leaving for Galt..
The diary section filled in with pencil script notations from January (crossing out 1883 to 1901) to December 30th. There are mentions of Darius Bailey married to Miss Ceill, Mrs. Johnston, Mrs, Baker, Willie Dixon, Janet Gray, Mrs. Petitt, Mrs. Clark, Mrs. Howarth, Clair & Carrie (possibly daughters), George or Eli (possible husband), Warren Smith, John Secord, Chester Lindsay buried, got photo frame from Hopkin's $1.50, household duties including a lot of sewing, pickling & canning peaches & tomatoes, churning butter, baking a cake, pie & oatmeal cookies, Queen Victoria's death.
There is a separation page in the diary signed, 'Smith'.
