Original British Etching on wove paper by William Scott (1848-1918), R.E., Titled Twice, & Signed in the plate, 'William Scott Venice Sep 1881, Ponte del Pistor', Signed in the border in graphite, wooden frame: 21 3/4” x 11 1/2”: Sight Image: 15 1/4” x 5 1/2”, in acid free matting.
Depicted in the etching, is Ponte del Pistor (Pistor Bridge), a bridge in San Lio, Venice, Italy. The bridge is also called “delle Paste” due to the presence of a pastry shop, with the sign, “Poste delle Paste”. The art of the pistori referred to bread sellers and were attributed to the School of the Albanians in San Maurizio. It's located on the Rio del Piombo (279 metre channel), originally called Rio del Piombo Brusa, a reference to an active lead smelter in the 16th century.
Architect, painter, etcher and illustrator, the artist apprenticed in London, and in 1870 passed the Royal Institute of British Architects exam. He was awarded the Silver Medal in the Royal Institute of British Architects' Soane Medallion Competition in 1875.
In the 1880's and 1890's he travelled, & lived in Italy. The artist's primary works were Venetian subjects. He was in Venice at the same time as James Abbot McNeill Whistler (1834-1903), R.B.A., & was friendly with the artist, attending his 'Sunday Breakfasts (private art shows)'. Scott exhibited at the R.B.A. where Whistler was elected its president in 1886.
The artist was part of the revival movement in the 19th century, looking romantically, for instance, through the Venetian Gothic style originating in the 14th century, a combination of Byzantine and Moorish influences, to escape the modernity of their industrialized century.
He was a member of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers (R.E.).
