Original, Hand Coloured Engraving Titled, 'Printing and Publishing House of Hunter, Rose & Co., Wellington Street West', by (marked bottom right), Toronto Engraving Co., 1884, 10” x 7.9”, with toning.
This is a rare hand coloured example of this engraving. Information about the company is found on verso.
Hunter, Rose, and Company was started in 1861 by George MacLean Rose (1829-1898), & Robert Hunter in Quebec City, & moved to Ottawa, Ontario in 1865. By 1868, they had moved to Toronto, & prospered enough to build a, “large & valuable building” on Wellington St. West in 1875. After the death of Robert Hunter on May 15, 1877 at age 39, Rose became the sole owner of Hunter, Rose & Co., bringing in his brother, Daniel as partner. The company were publishing right up into the 1980's.
From the 1884 Toronto City Directory, George Maclean Rose, & Daniel Rose were listed as the owners, & their listed services were printers, publishers, bookbinders, electro & stereotypers, at 25-29 Wellington St. West.
