RARE WATERCOLOUR & GRAPHITE THREE KITTENS in a Woven Basket PAINTING on paper, c1890s, wooden frame (c1930's): 21 1/4" x 15"; sight image: 15 1/4" x 8 3/4" with about 7 tears, stabilized by being laid down on acid free rice paper. Found in Pennsylvania, it's protected by acid free matting, & Tru Vue Conservation Clear, UV protection glass. The kittens depicted are a silver Persian, Calico tabby (tricolour - white with Tortoiseshell patches), & Red Persian. One of the determining factors that it was painted in the 19th Century, apart from the age of the paper the painting is on, is the depiction of the Persians. In the 19th Century Persians, originating from the Turkey region, had a wedge face, & protruding muzzle. Today Persians have flat, & round faces.
