Brief history of the Richard company.
This company was founded in 1845 in Lyon, France by Felix Richard.
In 1882 Jules Richard formed a partnership with his younger brother Max, as “Richard Frères”, and although this was dissolved in 1891.The Richard company was particularly associated with a range of scientific instruments: barometers, thermometers, chronographs and so on .
The company never produced miscellaneous photographic apparatus but concentrated exclusively on stereoscopic equipment.
The Verascope stereo cameras (Stereoscope) was the basis of this entire side of the business. It was patented in 1891, becoming the best-selling stereoscopic camera of the period. Central to the latter was the Taxiphote viewer, patented in 1899.
Richard’s Company was one of the great scientific instrument makers and designers of that age.
