Benarr Macfadden (born Bernard Adolphus McFadden, 1868-1955) was a proponent of physical culture, a combination of bodybuilding with nutritional and health theories. He founded the long-running magazine publishing company Macfadden Publications. He was the predecessor of Charles Atlas & Jack LaLanne. Macfadden thought it best “to live a wholesome, rational life, and the forget the body as much as possible.”
He also was a vegetarian, & opened the restaurant, 'Physical Culture', in New York City in 1902, which was one of the city's first vegetarian venues. By 1911, there were 20 'Physical Culture' vegetarian restaurants established in other cities such as Philadelphia, & Chicago. He was proponent of raw foodism.
