RARE ISLAND CEYLON by CANADIAN ROLOFF BENY (1924-1984), R.C.A.*, SIGNAT. by Mr. Beny in black ink, 105 Illustrations - 72 Colour Tipped in Plates, 1st Canadian Edition, 224 pgs., McClelland & Stewart, Toronto, 1971, 13 3/4" x 11 3/4", in excellent condition with 1/16" surface nick on bottom right of front cover, & scuffing on mylar covers does not appear to extend to the dustcover itself that has no visible edge wear, & price intact with clean text, & covers. Mylar back cover, & not dustcover itself, has approximately 1/4" loss.
On thick textured paper are included 26 Line Illustrations by Philip Gotlop, drawings, & maps, with a text & anthology by John Lindsay Opie (1928-), Professor of Art History at the University of Rome, Italy, & an epilogue by the Science Fiction legendary author, Sir Arthur C. Clarke (1917-2008) on why he lives in Sri Lanka.
Ceylon, renamed Sri Lanka as of 1972, with over 2000 years of documented history, & a rich cultural heritage, is known for its lush landscapes, amply captured in this book. It has been nicknamed the 'pearl in the ear of India.'
Born Witieo Roy Beny in Medicine Hat, Alberta, he took up photography as a child, studied art at the University of Toronto, Banff School of Fine Arts (now Banff Centre for Continuing Education), & the Iowa State University where he completed a Masters degree. In the mid 1950's, he turned to photography full time, having his first show in 1955 in London, England. Internationally renowned, he held many exhibitions, & produced over a dozen lavishly illustrated books based on his travels. His honours include the gold medal at the 1968 Leipzig International Book Fair, officer of the Order of Canada (1972), & member of the *Royal Canadian Academy of Arts. 'The Roloff Beny Gallery' at the R.O.M. (Royal Ontario Museum) is the main exhibition space for Contemporary Culture.
Known as a 'poetic photographer', & he was quoted, "I paint with my lens", & "I see majestic ruins even in the architecture of the skies."
