The 1881 Canada Large Cent is an interesting piece of numismatic history. In 1881, the Heaton Mint produced a total of 2,000,000 1-cent coins. These coins are made of 95% copper, 4% tin, and 1% zinc. Each coin weighs 5.67 grams and has a diameter of 25.4 mm. Obverse: The front side features a bust of Queen Victoria wearing a diadem in her hair, surrounded by a beaded circle. Reverse: The back side showcases a serpentine motif of 16 maple leaves, also within a beaded circle. The denomination “ONE CENT” appears below the leaves. All 1881 1-cent coins have an “H” mintmark (indicating the Heaton Mint) under the date. Some notable varieties include the Double N, Triple N, Double die #1, Double die #2, and Single Serif N.
