ORIGINAL CDN ARTWORK, TORONTO'S 1ST POST OFFICE by R.C.A. ARTIST - $35 (Jarvis Street & Front Street E., Toronto, Ontario)

On textured paper, on the back is stamped in blue, 'Picture Collection', & in graphite script, 'Toronto-H-Custom Houses 1801', with a brief printed description of the scene depicted.
Born in Toronto on May 28, 1891, R.W. Murphy studied at the Ontario College of Art (O.C.A. - now O.C.A.D.U.) & the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. He taught at O.C.A. from 1931 until he joined the war effort in WWII, where he was the first official war artist of the Royal Canadian Navy, as well as a lieutenant there. After the war he returned to teaching at O.C.A.. The subject matter of a ship in this artwork was very appropriate to the life he led. He participated in numerous exhibitions including the 50th Anniversary Show of the Art Gallery of Toronto (now the Art Gallery of Ontario (A.G.O.)).
He was a member of the Royal Academy of Arts (R.C.A.), & Ontario Society of Artists (O.S.A.).
