Original German Drypoint Etching by Pa ul G. Wi nkler-Le ers (1887- 1945), BDG, Blindstamped in border with Ying Yang symbol, 'As ten', Signed in graphite in the border, 1935, wooden frame: 17 3/4” x 15 1/8”; Sight Image: 12.7” x 10 1/4”, in excellent condition with acid free matting.
In 1935, the artist was commissioned to do a series of etchings for the industrial felt-maker, Asten & Company (now known as As tenJo hnson) in Eupen, Belgium, of which this is one, depicting a pulp storage tank. The etchings were to show the process of making the company's product. AstenJohnson's history included Charles Johnson opening the first North American operation in Montreal, Quebec in 1901.
Born in Berlin, Germany in 1887, the artist studied under Emil Doepler “The Younger” (1855-1922), the Art Nouveau illustrator, 1913-15, and Emil Orlik (1870-1932), 1919-24. Orlik was head of the department for graphic art and book illustration at the Academy of the Museum of Applied Arts in Berlin. The artist was president of the BDG (Bund Deutscher Gebrauchsgraphiker: Association of German Commercial Artists, now known as the Professional Association of German Communication Designers), Berlin-Brandenburg, from 1925 to 1930.
