Rare When Newfoundland Helped to Save Canada by Gustave Lanctot, PhD., OC, QC, FRSC (1883-1975), Memoires De La Societe Royale Du Canada, Troisieme Serie, Section 1, Tome XLV, Illustrated, soft cover booklet, 12 pgs., La Societe Royale Du Canada, June, 1951, 10” x 6 3/4”, with wear including chips to covers, & water stains upper middle centre.
This was published a few years after Newfoundland joined Canada in 1949.
The stapled booklet outlines the role of Newfoundland volunteers in defending Canada during the American Revolution in 1775.
Three Illustrations from the Public Archives of Canada include:
Figure 1: a portrait of Sir Guy Carleton ((1724-1808), 1st Baron Dorchester) 'who victoriously defended Quebec in 1775'.
Figure 2: 'St. John's, Newfoundland, 1708. By H.P. Brenton'.
Figure 3: 'A general view of Quebec, from Point Levis, 1761. By Richard Short'.
Dr. Gustave Lanctot was a noted Canadian historian and archivist. On July 6, 1967, he was one of the first people to be made an Officer of the Order of Canada (then called a Service Medal). The citation read “Renowned historian whose 'Histoire du Canada (winner of the 1963 Governor General's Award for French language non-fiction)' marks the culmination of a life devoted to knowledge of Canada's past”.
Carleton commanded British troops in the American Revolutionary War, first leading the defence of Quebec during the 1775 rebel invasion and the 1776 counteroffensive that drove the rebels from the province.
