This is an angle that you didn't see in the finished film. My guess is that in testing people were still buzzing about seeing that it was John Wayne leading Jesus to the cross resulting in the crucifixion itself losing its impact. Hence Wayne was not revealed to be the Centurion until after Christ was crucified.
