Whippletrees (also called whiffletrees) were used in pioneer days when a horse was pulling a plough, harrow or canal boat. The whippletree, a horizontal wooden bar, was used between the horse and its load. The centre of the bar was connected to the plough
and the traces were attached to the ends. The whippletree balanced the pull from each side of the horse and kept the traces from pulling in on the sides of the horse.
