Selling a nice working, built like a tank, made in North America MTD/Sears vertical shaft, garden roto tiller (rotospader, cultivator) with a heavy duty cast iron gearcase & powered by a bulletproof 5 hp Briggs & Stratton engine.
Just purchased & serviced it (please refer to photos - sorry, accidentally deleted the pic of the carb dismantled & cleaned) to do my autumn tilling and to keep a machine with lots of life left from needlessly going to a landfill and am now selling it to conserve garage space.
Conditions for tilling were hardly ideal today (given the rain Fri night & early Sat morning), but she still did a nice job despite the moisture in the soil (see before & after photos). Could have gone deeper, but at this time of year, I just till to kill the grass & weeds in the garden.
And, yeah, she's pretty homely, but, is, nonetheless, a deluxe model MTD as she has:
- a clutch pulley drive system rather than belt drive like 90% of MTD vert shaft tillers have (and ALL chaindrive models and front tine geardrive ones have), so there is no need to remove the engine from the frame to replace a belt (see photos of clutch drum on engine shaft & clutch drive wheel inside bowl shaped housing)
- a 5hp Briggs rather than the 3, 3.5, or 4 hp that 95% of other MTD vert shaft tillers have
- and an oil drain plug located on the side of the oil fill channel rather than under the engine
She also features roller bearings inside the gearcase covers/caps to support the tine rotor (see photo) rather than the cheap, thin, easily worn plastic bushings that ALL chaindrive tillers (whether newer or older models) have, which require the entire chaincase to be taken apart to replace.
As can also be seen in a couple photos, the gearcase was still full of factory grease and the worm & drive gears are still in excellent shape. There is also 2/3s of the long lasting clutch drum lining remaining (see photo).
The tines are 12.5" in diameter and till a 25" swath. And the outer pair can easily be removed in order to till flowerbeds or between vegetable plants.
Wheel height can be adjusted by removing the assembly's locking pin.
The original metal fuel tank had a slight leak, so I replaced it with a nicer looking one that is rust free inside.
Incidentally, the original ignition coil (seen in one photo attached to the points & condenser) overheated after 8-9 minutes when I was testing it, so I replaced it with a static (breakerless) coil off a lawnmower engine, and the original starter cord spring snapped off at the end, so I replaced the entire rewind with one off a snowblower engine blower housing.
Asking $200 for this nice working, well constructed, recently cleaned, inspected, & serviced deluxe model machine. Firm.
No haggling, please: I already reduced the price 60 bucks on account of the shabby paint job the previous owner gave her lol
