It is traditionally used for treating colds and cough in infants, babies and adults. It is an excellent addition to stuffings, stews and soups. It goes well with strong-flavoured meats such as venison, pheasant and lamb. The leaves can be used to make tea or steamed and served as a vegetable, which is popular in Southeast Asia. It is a major flavour in Jamaican cuisine. Cuban oregano leaves are used in traditional medicine to treat sore throats, colds, coughs, nasal congestion, infections, rheumatism and even flatulence. With its fleshy, pleasantly aromatic leaves and a distinctive flavour of oregano and thyme, it makes a lovely houseplant, especially when daylight drops below 12 hours, at which time the plant bursts into pale purplish flowers that bloom in dense whorls - a welcome sight on the winter windowsill. Cuban oregano is an easy-to-grow plant; it is a hardy and carefree herb that tolerates sun and drought. As a houseplant, it does best in bright, indirect light or partial sun.
Water your Cuban oregano when the soil surface feels dry to the touch. Do not fertilize this plant while it is flowering in the winter. Toward spring and throughout the summer you can feed it lightly every two weeks with a good fertilizer mixed to half strength.
This easy-to-grow plant does well in pots and containers. A south, east or west window provides enough light. You can put the plants outside to enjoy the sunshine after danger of frost next May.…just remember to bring them back into the house before frost in the Fall.
