Now in dainty purple bloom, this fascinating and unusual houseplant is sure to attract attention and start a conversation. It thrives on neglect. Comes in 2” square pot. Antique decorator pot available for $1 more.
Mexican Butterwort is a carnivorous plant with sticky leaves and stems; a lime green rosette forming insectivorous herb. Likes moist soil with organic matter or sphagnum moss. Very sensitive to dry soil. Give 1/2 cup of water every 7 days. Place 1 foot from window so it doesn’t burn and dry out in draught. East window is fine; south window is too bright. No fertilizer needed.
Repot after 2X growth. Eats fungus gnats and aphids. The most popular Butterwort. Good in terrarium. It’s flypaper leaves decimate fungus gnat and aphid populations. Forms 2-8” rosettes of lime green leaves with pinkish blotches or edging.
It retreats into 2-4” rosettes of spoon shaped, non carnivorous succulent leaves from winter into early spring in their natural habitat as those months are dry. The leaves stay compact to prevent moisture loss. These leaves can be used for propagation by slicing them from the main plant and placing them in moistened soil. During this dormancy period, the plants produce a first set of blooms. The second and final set of blooms come in late summer. It thrives on neglect; and is used to nutrient poor soil in natural habitat.Tuck sphagnum moss under the leaves to retain moisture.
Stop giving it water around Hallowe’en. Just a sprinkle in winter, ie twice in winter. Sometimes bottom leaves die (normal). Some discolouration is fine.)
Comes from a smoke free, pet free home.
