Tube or solid state amp need a tune up or repair? Guitar electronics mod you want to do that you're not up to taking on? Synth/keyboard/pedals not working? Guitar needs a proper set-up? Not sure how to achieve something technically? Need a custom solution and/or software designed to accomplish something unusual?

Mike'll fix it!

Michael Fix-It isn't a business, I'm a music software developer by trade who does physical repair and modifications to guitars, amps, electronic instruments and effects as a hobby. I've been repairing keyboard and seting up guitars for decades, but have just recently set up with everything I need to safely work on tube amps and am looking forward to building up some more experience beyond working on just my own gear. I have some free space on my bench, would you like to cover the materials and a small fraction of my time while I work on your gear? I can't promise fast (I have no stock in parts and might need to order new tools as the need arises) but I can promise you a top spot in the waiting list and that I won't be rushing any jobs or taking on any jobs I'm not capable of. I'm still learning a lot and benefit from the time spent - so I won't be charging you by the hour, we'll work something out. Also, if I can't fix it, I won't and I won't make it worse! 48 years of experience with a soldering iron! ;)

Second update of this ad now and after the first few months it's been going great so far, many guitars have been made great players once again, a Telecaster got returned to single coils, a Boss delay/sampler pedal is triggerable again, and my first tube amp projects are now underway with an '80s Marshall JCM 800 and a '66 Fender Bassman! (If you never hear from me again you'll know I electrocuted myself for science.)

Just as a rough idea on pricing: I've been doing basic guitar setups starting at $40 but have been taking a bit too much of a bath on that (also I risk becoming too popular and having a backlog, I've already got projects piling up!) so let's make it $60 now that I'm illegitimately semi-pro. That also functions as a "bench fee" for any work on a guitar, as a setup is always the first and last thing you have to do when doing any larger repair. (Well, unless the repair is so obvious that you can diagnose the issue before doing the first setup. Successive setups if there are further repairs done are free.)

Basic setup includes restringing (please bring new strings) truss rod/neck relief adjustment (and if that can't be done we stop there and ask you how to proceed, as the guitar needs major work) tremolo (vibrato/whammy) adjustment, action height (bridge saddle height) adjustment, fretboard oiling (if unfinished), hardware oiling, nut lubrication (I just draw in the slots with pencil "lead"/graphite), minor fret end dressing (round off any sharp fret corners on the fretboard edges) and very minor fretwork. (Often we'll find a single proud fret is making the guitar buzz on one note and that causes us to have to raise the entire action to compensate. I now have some very expensive tools from Stew-Mac that make quick work of this.)

And if the frets are really chewed up, I have the radius sanding blocks and crowing file ($100 just for one file!) needed to do full fret levelings on most Fenders and Gibsons (7.25". 9", 10", 12", radiuses).

So give me a shout and let me know what you need, what you'd like, and what you've got and we'll take it from there. And good advice is free!
