vintage 1970s-80s B&D trimmer with 14cc, 2 stroke Kioritz engine - $40 (Jane St and Lawrence Ave West, North York)

12345678

Hi. Selling a rare, late 1970s to early '80s Black & Decker model 8270-04 line trimmer (string trimmer, weed whacker) powered by a 14 cc made in Japan Kioritz 2 stroke engine in nonworking condition.

Was brought it by a neighbour who wanted me to get it up & running as it had been his dad's. Tried to dissuade him b/c a) newer trimmers have much bigger engines with more power and b) Kioritz parts are NLA & used ones are hard to come by in good condition. Only agreed to try b/c he brought me a two-four lol

Among the things I did were check for spark; test the on/off switch; check for compression (it's adequete); remove, dismantle, & clean the muffler (incl, of course, the spark arrestor screen); repair the cracked fuel tank (I melted the crack with a low temp torch tip & then applied 2 coats of Seal All); remove, dismantle, & clean the carb, installing new gaskets & diaphragms from a Walbro WA kit; checked the cylinder & piston through the manifolds; cleaned & gapped the points; etc.

Put fuel in her, fired her up, and ... she ran rough at idle, did not power up when the throttle was engaged, and spat fuel out both the carb and the exhaust. Clearly a timing issue.

Changed plug twice to no effect. That was the ballgame.

Btw, the rewind and clutch seemed to work fine.

Informed neighbour that she needed the condenser, coil, or flywheel key replaced and that all were NLA. Added that I doubted that anyone made a static coil or a chip for the Kioritz. In any case, I had (have) better things to do than try to find rare, used parts online.

He told me to keep it, but as I have little spare room in my garage, I removed the carb gaskets & diaphragms (see last photo for reference as to which types you will need) and am putting the B&D up for sale.

Incidentally, I have worked on older Echos (believe their model # was SRM140D), Toros, & Sears/Craftsman trimmers that were very similar to this B&D in regard to the engine, rewind assy, etc (the Echos, however, had top mounted tanks), so the parts will likely be compatible.

Also know that these Kioritzs are popular with RC plane enthusiasts (at least they were years ago).

In any case, am selling the complete B&D as is for $40. Firm.

Good parts engine/machine. At the least, it would make an interested man cave wall hanger.

Pick up only. Sale is final. If the you see the ad, it is available. Duh
